How to beat Gehrman
Refusing Gehrman's offer in the Hunter's Dream starts the final hunter duel. His NG reward table lists 128,000 Blood Echoes and the Old Hunter Badge. Many weapon attacks can be interrupted, but his area blasts are not firearm-parry opportunities.
Accepting his offer is a valid ending, not a failed fight. Refusing leads to the duel; consuming three cord thirds before his defeat adds the Moon Presence afterwards. Decide your ending before expecting a normal post-boss break.
Read the weapon, then commit
Against the scythe, stay just outside a swing and shoot during a committed windup, or evade the combo and punish its recovery. Do not empty your stamina chasing his quicksteps. Take a short attack window and back away far enough before using a vial.
When he switches to blade and firearm, avoid trading into the gun: it can stagger you for his visceral. His later empowered moves include an area blast and an aerial projectile. Create distance for the blast and dodge the projectile instead of trying to parry every animation.
Echoes and the next encounter
The listed NG reward is 128,000. The Moon Presence branch can affect when the echoes are received: the data wiki documents receiving them after quitting during the Moon Presence cutscene and returning. Do not describe that branch as permanently having no Gehrman reward, or confuse a summoned helper's reward with the host's.
Questions
Do I have to fight Gehrman?
No. Accept his offer for Yharnam Sunrise. Refusing starts the duel; three consumed cord thirds add the Moon Presence after his defeat.
Why did I not see the expected echoes?
Check whether the Moon Presence sequence followed. The data wiki records a cutscene/reload condition for receiving Gehrman's echoes on that branch. The NG table lists 128,000; host and helper rewards should not be conflated.
