Characters and NPCs
Friendly names you will actually meet include the Plain Doll, Gehrman, Eileen, Alfred, Djura, Patches the Spider, Arianna, Adella, Annalise, Gilbert, Iosefka, Master Willem, Valtr, and Simon. Hostile hunter fights are a different list.

I pulled the friendly roster off the NPC index and then refused to write a quest paragraph for every name. Missable timing is where these guides go wrong. The six pages linked here are the ones we checked. Everyone else stays a name until the steps are verified one by one.
Where to go next
The Doll levels you. The Hunter page is about the player character and clothing. Eileen, Alfred, Djura, and Patches have quest pages. Gehrman is both an NPC and a boss.
If you searched “patches” looking for update 1.09, you want the PS4 page, not the spider.
Questions
Who levels me up?
The Plain Doll, after you have at least one Insight.
Is Patches a patch note?
Patches the Spider is an NPC. Game updates are on the PS4 page.
