Great Ones and Kin

Great One is a narrative identity; Kin is also used as a game-mechanical damage category. They are not mutually exclusive lists. Rom and Ebrietas are clear examples where a Great One identity coexists with the Kin damage flag.

Evidence guide: item descriptions and trophy text support the identities below; the Kin list supports combat bonuses only. Neither a boss's size nor its elemental defenses establish its place in a divine family tree.

Named beings and the evidence for them

  • Oedon: Formless Oedon explicitly identifies a formless Great One existing through voice; Oedon Writhe repeats the connection with blood. There is no Oedon fog-gate boss. The Arianna cord connects Oedon to the child event, without explaining a visible body.
  • Kos: Kos Parasite says a corpse washed onto the coast carrying parasites. Accursed Brew records the violation of villagers' skulls. The corpse and Orphan encounter anchor Kos to the Fishing Hamlet; these do not justify claiming the hunters killed Kos before the corpse arrived.
  • Orphan of Kos: the DLC boss emerges at Kos's corpse, and the final spirit scene identifies a child of Kos returning to the sea. The precise relationship between the nightmare fighter and the historical infant remains interpretation. Mechanically, the Orphan is not Kin.
  • Moon Presence: the workshop cord ties the pale moon to the creation of the Hunter's Dream. Miyazaki's Future Press interview connects Paleblood to the monster from the moon. That identification does not explain its ultimate motive or prove a complete account of its relationship with Gehrman.
  • Ebrietas: Augur of Ebrietas describes partially summoning the abandoned Ebrietas; Great Isz Chalice links her audience with the Choir. Her boss trophy explicitly calls her a Great One. She also takes Kin-specific damage bonuses.
  • Rom: the boss trophy explicitly calls Rom a Great One. The damage-category reference also lists Rom as Kin. Her death exposes the Blood Moon, but neither that event nor her Kin flag settles all theories about her origin.
  • Amygdala: the Frontier boss trophy calls Amygdala a Great One. This does not mean every building-clinging Amygdala is that single boss. The boss is not Kin for damage-bonus purposes.
  • Mergo and the Wet Nurse: the Wet Nurse cord says Mensis gained an audience with Mergo, while its general text concerns infant Great Ones and lost children. The trophy explicitly calls the Wet Nurse a Great One. Mergo is the unseen child, not another name for the nurse; the crying and its cessation frame the encounter without giving Mergo a visible adult body.
  • Other explicit examples: Celestial Emissary's trophy calls it a Great One, and it is mechanically Kin. Living String explicitly identifies the Brain of Mensis as a legitimate Great One. A short named list must not erase either example.

Use Kin correctly in a build

The damage reference lists Rom, Ebrietas, Celestial Emissary and Living Failures among Kin bosses. Amygdala, Moon Presence, Wet Nurse and Orphan are not on that Kin list. Use the combat flag for Kinhunter gems, not as a test of narrative divinity. A human origin, unusual anatomy or a nightmare setting alone does not decide the category.

What remains a reading

A shared theme of lost children and surrogates is explicit in cord descriptions. A complete parentage chart, a single motive shared by every Great One, or a rigid cosmic ranking is not. Treat those as interpretations and identify the particular item or scene supporting each proposed connection.

Questions

Are Kin lesser Great Ones?

That shorthand is unreliable as a universal rule. The mechanical Kin flag and the narrative title overlap but do not describe the same classification system.

Is Rom a Great One or Kin?

Both descriptions have evidence: the trophy calls Rom a Great One, and the combat reference lists the Kin damage flag. One does not cancel the other.

Is Mergo the boss with the blades?

No. The blade-wielding boss is Mergo's Wet Nurse. Mergo is the child associated with the crying and the Mensis audience.
